Painting stand pipes

I work at a LFS and the owner wants to paint the stand pipes in the back of the aquarium is this safe? If so what paint do you use?

Are the pipes pvc? If so then there are several different types of spray paint designed to adhere to plastics. I picked some up at lowe's and painted my return plumbing black. I believe krylon makes something called "fusion" that bonds to plastics. I would think it was safe as long as it's fulley cured and maybe rinsed off.
