What I really think would be a big boost to this hobby would be to take some of the guides, tips , etc and have a Wiki.
Im really suprised that there isnt a central repository like that where people can search, I love these forums but I imagine that a lot of the newb questions could be aleviated if this existed. (if it does PLEASE let me know where) |

Thank you for the Special Day. Can we also have a special day for those who go out of their way to help us when we do stupid things? I haven't yet in SW but I did when starting out in FW. I haven't asked any questions yet and am still planning what size tank to get/afford. This forum has been so incredibly helpful.

What is this? Some type of Newbie Revolt? Drop and give me 50 Kathain!
I hope you realize that we joke somewhat with the Newbies on this forum. Anybody in the know will tell you that I'm the biggest offender. We do welcome Newbies whole heartedly into this wonderful hobby. So if you want a day of your own, so be it. To Reef Central and I'll sticky this today.

And completely unrelated -- How long do you have to be in this hobby before you're no longer considered a newbie?

We do have this thread New-First Time on RC-Look Here for Answers at the top of this forum and it is packed with all sorts of info for the beginner.
I consider any tank under a year to be a new tank and any reefkeeper younger than myself to be a Newbie; which probably includes about 98% of the membership on RC.

Hey alright.... posted my 1st question today, and then discovered it's NATIONAL RC NEWB DAY..... how cool is that!
Anyway, won't miss the op to plug my 1st question thread... which can be found here if you feel so inclined to throw me some wisdom.... http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...readid=1205344 Thanx to all who keep this forum full of it..... wisdom that is.... It has been a great resource for me so far. I'm only 2 mos into researching my 1st tank, and I've already learned a ton, and even made a few used equipment purchases through RC. Happy Day to all my fellow NOOOOOOBs out there! |

Happy Newbie Day!
I'm a Career Newbie on everything, I keep an open mind, read and ask questions (even the new newbie’s have something to teach me since they have fresh thoughts). Many are doing things the "experts" say can't be done but yet you see it and it works. I saw a tank locally, where he is over stocked and is doing the unthinkable by running hang on Filters and limited live rock yet it looks fantastic! Even I have done the dastardly deed of putting snails and crabs and even a fish in my tank before it was even a month old. Yet all my levels are 0 and the tank is doing well, my live rock looks great and life is popping up all over. There is a 35 yr old tank on the board that shows it can be done simple. Stay a newbie and learn. |

And, besides, I'm an RC newb, but not a reef newb, silly! But thanks for the sticky! You make me feel all special inside, as special as I had hoped all the S/W newbies on RC would feel when they saw Newbie Appreciation Day! There's just a bit of a revolt AGAINST newbs on another forum I'm a member of (juggling related so don't any members of other aquatics/reef/pet clubs feel offended- if you're a member of this forum, you know what I'm talking about! It's so ridiculous that it's red-iculous!). It just made me realize that, while we are much kinder to newbies on RC, that we can sometimes seem a bit harsh and critical of them. I kind of figured since, hey, we were all in the position of the "newbie" at one point or another, that we really should take the time to make sure that the newbies are getting the attention in this forum they need. So, I figured it was definitely time for a sit-down chat to make sure the newbies and the oldies are all on the same page about if there's anything else they'd like to see going on in here..... that doesn't require being a moderator to do. Now, to the business of answering some other responses. Unfortunately, the only way to change the search function is to either get a paid membership or use a sort of backdoor means like the Google search site function. Sorry. Again, I'm not a mod, so I can't do that. However, a wiki is a most excellent idea. Lemme do some looking into this and see what exactly could be done to back-log some of the older, highly useful postings and information in a wiki format, such as Travis's excellent guide to starting a new s/w tank. I can't make any promises about actually completing a wiki, but I can promise to try.... since I don't need to be a mod to make a wiki.... As per a current repository, many people use WetWebMedia, but, sadly, their site can be a bit cumbersome and awkward, as much of the real gems of information are buried in a sort of write-in/response section to each area. It makes it just a smidge hard to find the really good stuff. Drag Racer... thanks... thanks a lot. Now I've got to wipe all the drool off my keyboard from that kicking car. Very sweet ride!

Nice car Drag Racer!
Happy newbie day everyone! I'm celebrating as much as the new reefer is. This forum has been a great help and has allowed me to start to successfully keep my tank without any major problems!

Man, I make one little comment and look at all this that happened in my absence
Kat, I agree so whole heartedly with what you had said earlier, if it hadn't been for RC I probalby wouldn't still be in the hobby. And not just because of the incrediable wealth of information to be found but the attitude I'm shown here, So many people saying "you can do it" vs people trying to concince us how hard it is. I actually started off with freshwater cause "it's easier" and all I can say after 2 years in thehobby....BullCrap!! My SW tank is far easeir to maintance than the last planted discus tank i had.....just a little more expensive (and not by much) Bless the hearts of all the rc staff and members who keep this site working it's magic day after day. You guys make a huge difference in the hobby, don't ever forget that.

j/k But a word of advise for you guys/gals -- when posting a question about your tank please try to provide as much info as possible about your set up. And "fine", "good" "excellent" are not answers to what your water parameters are. Actually numbers go a very long way. Your "fine" maybe be completely different then someone else's.
