Halimeda algae

I picked some of this up today at my LFS. After I bought it I was told it would not do well with Chaeto, and may get overun by the chaeto in my refugium.

I have it in my display tank for now. Will having it in the display tank be ok?

Thx Mark

I've always enjoyed halimeda in the main display. IME it doesn't grow terribly quickly, doesn't smother coral, and is easy to harvest.

Keep in mind that it's a calcium hog.

The Halimeda in my 2.5 gal pico grows a new segment or 2 at least every day... In my experience it grows pretty darn quickly, I have to prune it back every week...

Halimeda is like any other common macro algae. It will grow faster in favorable conditions, like higher nutrient water.

I have a lot of tangs in my display. I am just curious if people kept it with tangs or if the Halimeda is history? See red house for my tank.

I've got a huge (basketball-sized) patch of Halimeda in my 90g. Smaller pieces are forever popping up in other areas, but I prune them - I like having greens, but only to a certain extent, so I try to keep it contained to one area. My yellow tang isn't at all interested in the Halimeda, but she does clean the rockwork of everything else, including other macros - Sargassum used to grow all over, now there's none, so I can only assume she's eating the new shoots before I even see them. I can't comment on how other tangs will behave, or even if mine will ignore it long-term, as I've only had her for a few months.

I have a refugium full of chaeto, and the two macros seem to coexist nicely - neither is outcompeting the other, as far as I can tell.

I had some with a tang and a foxface. The fish couldn't eat it, but they tried picking at it and eventually killed it anyway. On the bright side, I've never had any algea problems with those fish.
