Hard to say. How old is the tank? Did he introduce them all at the same time (fish)

Where the fish healthy? What kind was it?

Did he have a cucumber in the tank? When cucumbers die they give off toxins that kill fish but not other invertebrates.

I would recommend doing a large water change and running a cannister with lots of carbon before trying to restock this tank.

It could be a variety of things, and there's not enough information to give a solid guess. Though the specific gravity is quite low, it's nothing that will kill the animals as long as they were acclimated to it. I suspect disease. Did he ever quarinitine?

I'm leaning towards "they are not healthy to begin with".

Cyanide-caught is possible... Ich infested is possible... velvet? Also possible. Does he quarantine new purchases?

Maybe they are sick but nonetheless he should try and add only one at a time. This will create less chance of loosing them. Also he should check with his LFS to see what they are keeping the fish at.
