RO/DI Question
Hello,
Below is a link to a Culligan RO unit that we have installed underneath our kitchen sink. My wife insists that we have good drinking water (which consequently works out well for me and my tank). We currently pay $16 per month to rent the unit and I'm beginning to realize it would be cheaper in the long run to purchase one since they don’t pay for our filter replacement. http://www.culliganwater.com/pdf/349..._gwm_34907.pdf So I have a few options: 1. I know it doesn't have a DI portion to the filter which I’d like to have. My TDS PPM read about 110 right now /sigh. I could get an add-on deionizer canister filter which would only cost around $50 + the money to replace my current filters. Would this work? - see link – Total would be about $125-150 with shipping. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...96&pcatid=1209 2. Or would I be better off just ordering a new unit altogether like a Kent Marine? Keep in mind; I need to replace my filters at this time which is going to cost me $75 so now is a good time to change…at least I think. It also looks as if I could get a decent RO/DI unit for about $200-250. I don’t feel that I need anything more than 23-35GPD as my tank is only 75 gallons and my future upgrade will max out at 125/150 (my wife’s thoughts were…we can’t drink 35 gallons in a day anyway)…lol she has no idea of my intentions. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated – thanks fellas! Quick edit - I also found this and have read good things about his product. Any thoughts? http://www.melevsreef.com/ro_di.html I just checked our tap water and the TDS reads 390 ppm.

I have a 100gpd unit and it took me 3 days to fill my 150g tank and 55g sump, with a 25gpd system you will be filling your tank for a little under a week running it 24/7 figuring you'll have a sump.
I got my 100gpd unit from Melevs reef for about $120 or so....

Check out these http://www.reefcentral.com/ads/adcli...terguys.biz%2F
I purchased the reef +1 and have been very happy with it and you can get everything from them as far as connection pieces and filters and they have good customer service. |

If the TDS coming from the unit is 110 adding a DI filter to the existing is going to be a very expensive proposition as it wil eat DI resin like there is no tomorrow. You could actually go through a 20 oz DI cartridge in as little as 30 gallons at 110 TDS coming into it.
Get a new unit. It is much smarter to buy a reef quality unit and add a drinking water kit than buying the drinking water system and trying to modify it for reef use. Generally the filters are different with the reef system having much better filters and a larger GPD membrane. You will want to look for a 75 GPD system as most 100 GPD systems use a filter which can be much less efficient. The 25 or 75 will give you the same 96-98% efficiency but the 75 will make water 3 times faster. Waiting for water when it is just dripping out is a pain. I would not consider the Kent as it is way overpriced for what you get.
