skimmer set-up ?

Hello,i was wondering if with internal skimmers where most people dump the skimmed water exiting the skimmer?Should it fall back into the sump and if it so does the fact that its mixing with unskimmed water again matter?

Secondly for those of you who gravity your external skimmers could you direct the excess water thats regulated by the ball valve to the refugium instead of the sump,even if this means the excess water has to travel horizontally about 3-4 ft to the fuge section?Its a( return/skimmer/fuge) style sump.

Myself...I have the water going into an old plastic jug (4 gallon or so, because every once in awhile my skimmer goes nuts and the small contaner would not be enough!...besides the water is gross and smelly!!
