Sanders Ozonizers - Why so hard to find?

Though the RedSea units are everywhere, I've read mixed reviews (though it's tough to tell with first time O3 users if the unit is the problem or user error somehow). Anyway, I read nothing but good things about Sanders Ozonizers (I know the name from the 80's), but not many carry them. I found them on AquaticEco.com for way too much, and on fishsupply.com. Anywhere else I should look, or should I give te ReadSea unit another look? It's awfully cheap though, at $270 for 100mg/hr unit with controller. The sanders is $230 for the unit alone....I've always discovered you get what you pay for...

Sanders is tough to find these days, but I remember them well. My first skimmer was made by them (wooden airstone flashbacks.... )

Premium has Aquamedic and GenX units if you're looking for an alternative, but neither comes with controller. FWIW, I have used the RedSea 100MG Deluxe for years with no trouble.

LOL, my first skimmer too...what was it called, piccolo or something?

Not necessarily looking for an alternative, just was a little concerned about the price differences, though I suppose the Sanders could just be overpriced

Unfortunartely I don't live in Europe. Only QualityMarine wholesaler came up in the US on that list.

I've looked into the Sanders versus others as well. AquaticEco is also the only place I could find them. From what i've read it seemd like the Sanders could be opened up so that the plates that generate the ozone could be cleaned whereas on the RedSea unit, you cannot do that. That alone would seem like a huge advantage for the Sanders in my book. The aquamedic unit can also be disassembled for cleaning according to their online manual. Ozotech is another option but I could not get any info on them when I posted here on RC about a week ago. Good luck and let us know what you go with and how it works out for you. Their doesn't seem to be a lot of reviews and info on ozone on the boards, maybe not that many people are actually using it.

I think that RedSea sees the cleanable plates as a big liability. To generate Ozone you are dealing with large current loads so the idea of having people pulling the plates out and cleaning them with something that could cause a short or is flammable is not really worth it. I think its one more reason why to use a dryer with your unit so your pumping in less contaminates into your generator. I have an Ozotech and its a total pain to find information on it and its quite a few years old so its time to replace it. I am going to replace it with a RedSea unit.

How do you know that?

I could find them online, but have they discontinued making them? It seems MD no longer carries them, and the Aqua Medic USA website has no ozonizers listed at all.

I had both (25mg). Inside they are identical, outside they are the same dimension, even the power adapter are the same, and they are both made in Germany.

Well, I emailed Aqua Medic to see why they are so hard to find and this is the reply I got:

"Hello ,
The Ozone generators are still manufactured in Europe, but are no longer
available in the US. Sorry for the confusion.

I bought my 50mg Sanders from fishsupply.com as well.

If you can find a Sanders then buy it. My 25mg kept up with a 125 sps dominated mixed reef. It ran very little and kept the orp at 400. The 25mg unit was rated for a 50 gallon tank yet it easily handled about 130 gallons of water after subtracting rock and substrate.

Cleaning is about as easy as it gets, remove two screws and wipe the plate down with r/o water and put the plate back on.

I sent fishsupply.com an email asking if the actually stock the units, or if there is a lead time to get them. We'll see what they say.

Aquamedic stopped making the generators for the US market. So i'm sure everyone is out of them and probably won't get any new one's until they start remanufacturing them.
