ID please white shrimp?
I just found this guy last night, hitch hiked on my TBS. I know its some kind of shrimp. The tail looks like my mantis. Maybe a juvenile pistol? He is all white with one large red claw. Two black eyes on the top of his head kind of reminds me of spider eyes. Very small like 1/2 or 3/4" long. Sorry for the bad pic, it was all I could get before he hid.
Thanks for any help |

Sounds like a pistol shrimp. Listen for gun shots at night.

I am pretty sure that is what it was but just wanted someone else to confirm. I have a question about pistol shrimp. I keep reading that they are reef safe. But if they kill and eat cleaner shrimp wouldn't they do that to other things too?

Their natural prey is shrimp. Mine has killed one of my peppermint shrimps, I bought another one yesterday and its still alive.
My hermit crabs when they cross in front of its tunnel, they get shot, their shell flipped over and shot again. I haven't lost anything to my pistol shrimp, except one peppermint shrimp. So I really doubt that they will kill anything else except a smaller pistol shrimp, or a mantis shrimp that's about their size, and a shrimp. Last edited by Maxi; 09/30/2007 at 11:26 AM. |

It would be good if he got the little mantis that I know is in there. I saw it once then it was gone. The mantis is about the same size as the pistol. Then again since I haven't seen the mantis maybe he already got him! |

The mantis can kill the pistol too! I haven't read or seen a pistol shrimp and mantis fight, but people say that pistol shrimp can kill a mantis.
