Couldn't you use it to run carbon?

If you already added additional LR, you can remove wet-dry filter media in small portions, and watch for ammonia in between. 4 days to 2 weeks interval between removal.
I used Fluval 404 canister filter with biomedia and phosphate remover, until just disconnected it one day (due to high maintenance - every 3 days). Additional, cured separately, LR (40Lb) was added in a month or two before this. 90g tank. Not an expert, but the filter could be the minor trouble, as long as you keep it clean. Check, if the debris are trapped in the sand bed, branches of LR, under starboard (if the tank is bare-bottom), under and behind the rock. You can use small powerhead or turkey baster for this. The other thing, you may still need the filtration media or very efficient skimming (mine is not) - if after removing the wet-dry filter nitrates will grow fast. And if you are feeding mandarins by the frozen food or pellets, keeping it all day long in the tank. Look at the bright side: it's doable, just have to be suitable for your particular tank

it really depends on your bio-load, your saying you already have another canister filter on the tank? The reason that people say that canister filters are "nitrate factories" is beause of the buildup of detrius in the filters. That rots and then you get your trates. So if you clean it out regularly, like every 2 weeks you really won't have any problems. just like bio-balls in a wet-dry application. I prefer running a fuge and a sump personally, but I've run a 180 folwr for a year with just a canister and power heads coupled with a good scrubbing and never had trate problems. and that was with messy fish.

If you have 1 - 1.5 Lb/gal of LR, for more than 2 weeks - you should be fine.
In case of doubt, I dosed Seachem Stability or BA Bio-Support - but the surface for bacteria to colonize have to be already in the tank. Test ammonia and watch fish and corals. Just in case of ammonia rising - keep at hand Prime or, as I heard, Amquel. I'm keeping fingers crossed for your tank. |
