120 Flow Question
I have a 120 gallon Tank 4' x 2' x 2'. It has a single center overflow with two returns. I have two Tunze Streams 6000 on a controller and a mag 12 as a return. I have some soft corals but like to start keeping some SPS.. Here is my current flow setup..
My question is.. Do i have enough flow for SPS? and How is the best way to setup the flow in the tank? Thanks. Tim |

What's the 6000 rated at? You want atleast a 20x turnover for SPS so do the math. Don't forget to calcualte head loss on the Mag.
And I'd also look into something with alternating/rotating current to make more random movements if you can. --Fizz

I would say yes, and further bump up to more like 30x or more flow. The 6000's are rated at 1849 gph, I believe. My 6060's are at 1585 gph, and my SPS seem to be pretty happy right now. Keep them clean so they maintain their pumping ability.

The 6000 are rated at 1875 gph.. I was thinking of getting a wave box but didnt know if it would be to much.. If i do get a wave box should I put both the streams in one corner and the wavebox in the other corner? Would that be the best route?

I've checked 3 different retailers and they all have it maxed out at 1849 gph, which isn't much of a difference, but you are talking a combined 50 gph less in your calculations than the number you have for its output...

If my math is right (and it probably isn't) even with 5ft of head on your mag you're at about 40x so that's fine. Although I still think random current is a good thing...you may be getting enough of it just by the fact that the 6000's are putting out soooo much water that the current is hitting the glass...which is the cheap way to generate random currents.
And I'm not a big fan of the wave boxes...or any product that generates "waves" with 1/2 second crest intervals. Maybe it's just me but I've never seen that in the ocean. I know some folks are going nuts over some of this stuff..but not me. At 15ft. where our corals live they are subjected to undertows, longshore currents and if the waves are fast enough MAYBE 3 or 4 second wave invervals. Although the real bottom line for me is that I don't think the tank is very relaxing to watch when sh*t is bangin' around everywhere. I had a sea-swirl in my old system, the new one I'm putting together will probably have an Ocean's Motions 4-way. --Fizz
