algae problem

Can any tell me what I am doing wrong. I have red and green algae growing on my walls but very little coralline algae. I clean the front glass every other day. I have been using purple up. I see a few small (1/4in) purple dots on my rocks. Should I be cleaning the back and sides as well.

Are you using RO/DI water? I ended up using a reator with Rowaphos to eliminate phosphates and my green algae went away pretty fast.

Yes I am using a RO/DI filter. I was wondering if my phosphate levels were to high. I am using a red sea test kit and my reading is 0.1 p.p.m. My NO3, NO2, and my ammonia are all 0.0 from what these cheap test tell me.

Hi,

I too am having an algae problem. My 72g FOWLR is about 9 months old. I'm getting that green film on my glass. Also growing on my live rock along with a red velvety algae ( or is that cyano?). I'm using RO/DI for make-up and top-off. I'm using Instant Ocean.

Fish : Blude Hippo Tang
Yellow Tang
Flame Angel
2 Percula Clowns
2 Banggai Cardinals
Hermit Crabs

I have a sump with a protein skimmer. Also using an Eheim 2028.

I went to my LFS and I was told that 9 hrs a day of light was too much and should keep it on for about 4 hrs a day, but keep lights totally off for about 1 week to help with algae problem. My lights are the Current Dual Satellite which provides about 230 watts of daylight and actinic.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Vin

I have been thinking about buying a phosphate reactor, but only if will help. Do corals use phosphates or did I dream that?
