Re-finishing pine cabinet,please help?
I currently have a 48 X18in oak finish, pine stand that a buddy of mine gave me.Im soon to build a 75g reef so here is were i start. Its fairly old so it has some cosmetic defects, but strength and condition of stand is great. Im planning to make it black. Since the stand has a somewhat faded finish should I ?
A)sand, prime twice, give it two coats of semi-gloss black paint, waterproof clear coat, and call it a day. or B) sand, and stain it black with a couple of coats. |

Make sure if you go the stain route to use a good wood conditioner/sealer. This could be the differencr between you doing it 1 time or 2. I had this experience recently. Salt started coming through the stain as the new varnish dried and I had little white spots all over it. Good luck.

I tried to stain an AGA pine stand darker once. It was a complete disaster. There was a sealer coating on the wood and the new stain would not penetrate even after a LOT of pre-sanding. I ended up re-scuffing and spraying it with my HVLP gun using 2 coats primer and 4 coats of Wal-Mart exterior paint (thinned for the gun of course)
Perfect! The tank frame was painted as well since it was oak and I hated it. I used a nice tan color of Krylon plastic paint for the tank, and had WalMart colormatch the stand paint to the lid of the Krylon. -J
