Drain to sump design help please.

Below is a picture of my sump for me new tank I am setting up. My first thought was to run 1.25 PVC (That is what fits the bulkhead) straight to the first section with the egg crate tray. Is this a good plan and should I put anything in the middle like a check valve to be able to adjust the drain flow. My second thought was to put a small piece of 1.25 PVC off of the bulkhead and then use a reducer with a barbed end and use flexible hose from that pont to the sump. Thoughts?

use a ball valve between the bulkhead and the end of the drain pipe, then you can shut off the flow to do maint.

I would get spa flex hose, it is white smooth pvc that is flexible and will fit right into your bulkhead. it can be bought at HD, Lowes, Menards, Ace...looks like this

I might be misunderstanding something, but for maintenance, you would want to kill the pump-up to the tank, which would also kill the drain-down. I would also be nervous about restricting drain flow in any way. drain flow should be higher capacity than anything that could possibly need draining. this prevents overflow floods.

Keep the 1.25 PVC, but use a ball valve to have some at the egg crate compartment and some to the refugium (I assume the middle part is the fuge section). Remember, you'll only will drain out what the pump can push water to the display tank. 1.25" OVC can handle 600 gph, but if your pump can only push 200 after the pumping height, then you'll only get 200 gph through the overflow.
