Miracle mud is the best for growing mangroves but sand or araginite will do. Needs lots of light to grow well pc t5 or hqi works well. Also grows very slow but gets big so be ready.

thanks! ill look into that mud stuff

yeah, the one at the LFS had to be at least 3 feet tall. it was so cool.

the tank would be 24"X24"X17" and kind of jsut the mangrove and a few things down there. the light would be a 250W halide.

how soon would the tree outgrow the tank. less than... i dont know, 2 or 3 years?

there is lots of info on mangroves out there....be careful I have read they have strong roots and can crack a tank or sump. I have also read that the best way to keep them is in a rubbermain container converted into a sump...I have no experience with them myself tho

I've never been convinced growing mangroves in a tank is a great idea. By "gets big" I dont think he meant three feet.... think more along the size of full size tree.

They also get rid of excess salt by secreting it on their leaves, which need to be misted clean just about daily.

you need to also keep your magnesium up to around 1400ppm; mangroves use it to secrete freshwater from saltwater

yeah, I know they are pretty much "real" trees. adn i hate to be the "i-dont-plan-for-the-future" aquarist, but what do you do when they get that big? honestly?

also, thanks to everyone who gave info on what specifically to do with water parameters and all that. and now that i think about it, the mangrove in the LFS wasnt kept in a typical glass tank.

maybe im getting into more than its worth. i suppose i could always jsut by a fake plant and put it next to the tank

they are very slow growing... maybe a couple/few of inches a year.
