Sump Ripoff, and a few other questions.
Firstly I would like to know if Truvu aquariums is ripping people off. Their approximately 18 gallon Skimmer Sump is $170, $10 dollars less than their 40 gallon tank. Is this a ripoff. Also I would like to know the best places to shop for equipment on the internet, both price wise and customer service wise.

sumps are normally expensive, they require more acrylic and time to build since you have to glue more parts together. A custom slump can easily cost 300 dollars or more...

Sorry for interrupting you, the alert thing said zero replies. I would still like to know anyone's favorite internet retailer.

Try ADHI. I've got their Model 30 refugium. It's acrylic and I'm happy with it. I did pay over $300 for it though.

A reason why there is such a small difference in prices is when people are making sumps out of acrylic sheets, a sheet costs X dollars and no matter if they use the whole sheet or half the sheet it is a sunk cost. So this could be a good reason why there is such a small difference in price. Most sheets are 2'x4'. So do a quick sketch and try to figure out the difference in size and possible sheet usage.

i just use old scratched up acrylic tanks for sumps. always in supply and go for a fraction of new acrylic tanks and no comparison to the cost of a new acrylic sump.
i make my fuge out of 5g buckets with phenomenal results. huge money savings right there...

Nice holy hand-grenade Gergzy.
are you saying you take an old scratched up acrylic tank and use that to cut the baffles and whatnot out of?

my sump for my 180g is a really scratched up 100g acrylic tank i got for like $100. i didnt put baffles in it as i use it for live rock holding and like an open sump design. but it wouldnt be that hard to find and cut old acrylic sheets and 'weld on' them to the existing tank being converted to a sump.

Maybe a used sump is the way to go. Also can't the middle space(don't know what it's called) be used for a fuge?

Get a used tank for a few bux. 300bux is rediculous if you ask me. I have 30bux sunk into my 80g sump fuge......two 40g rubbermaids, been running for 2yrs now.
