Overflow float height

I just filled my 72 gallon bowfront tonight and am trying to adjust the flow from the pump back to the tank. My question is how high above the pvc tube should the float be. The reason I am asking is there is quite a bit of noise coming from the float. Everything seems to leveled out ok but I would like to increase the flow back to the tank but my float is pretty high already.

What is the flow, (gph)? Is it a fuge or just a sump?

You're gonna have to help me understand what you have. I'm not getting what a float above the pvc tube is. Is it a siphon overflow or a mega overflow or what? Is the sump below the tank?

For a sump you want about 3 to 5 times turnover.

Yes the sump is in the cabinet below the tank. I am not sure what the name of the overflow is but it appears to be the standard overflow on a 5-6 year old All Glass aquarium. The overflow is approx a 24-30" 1" pvc. It has a plastic float in the top that floats above the overflow causing the overflow to open when the water goes above the pvc.
