Turnover for Sump/Refugium

Hello,

I am setting up a 40 breeder with a 20 long sump/heater/skimmer/refugium.

How much flow thru do I need?

I plan on two kora #1 for flow in the tank.

thanks

Ok You are setting up a 40 gallon display. You are also using a 20 gallon for a Sump refugium. The rule of thumb is to run 3 to 5 times tank volume/hr through your sump. Since one section of your sump is to be a refugium i would install a tee on your overflow / drain with a ball valve so you can control the amount of flow through your fuge area. Just make the return area in the center.

What kind of skimmer do you run and what is it's feed gph? There's no need to turn over (to the sump) much more than the skimmer feed rate. Maybe add 10-20%.

I'd shoot for about 350 gph sump turnover (after calculating head loss).

Thanks,

any plans for a refugium design to allow a reduced flow thru the refugium versus the sump/heater equipment.
