Question Curing LR: Wavemaker Required?

Really simple question: When curing LR in your tank, do you need a wavemaker?

I am setting up a 30g after the new year. I will have (2) MJ900s and an MJ400 for movement. Octo BH100 for skimmer. Will I need to get the wavemaker before I purchase the LR or can/should I wait til the rock is cured before putting the powerheads on the wavemaker?

Thanks,
RocketEngineer

A wavemaker is nice but not necessary for either application.

Nor do you ever NEED one. It's a nice touch, but not a neccesity for curing rock and/or keeping a reef tank.

I just hooked one up yesterday, and yes you dont need one but I would reccomend it. My tank is acting so much differently now. But to cure no.

depending on the setup naturally. Some tanks may have too thin of glass/acrylic and I've heard plenty of horror stories of their seams busting due to wavemaker usage. Not trying to scare ya'll, just a thought to keep in mind, make sure your tank will be fine prior to hooking one up. I'm sure these incidences are not "common" so to speak but possible.

I'd love to have a wavemake myself, love the look you get from them. Oh well, guess my Koralia's will just have to do.

I just paid $35 for one in the classifieds. The only problem is my koralia 4 makes the start up noise every time. But its not to loud.

I think the OPer, might be referring to a "wavemaker" that turns the pumps on and off, compared to something like the Tuzne wavebox, which I think you are thinking about.

Doh! Think you're right on the money Todd. My bad. lol

So my answer stands as follows, not needed but really nice gadget to have. And definatly not needed to cure anything, but do make a big difference with flow in the tank as well as eleminating dead spots and laminar flows.

Of course I am, look at my sig.

When I cured my live rock (( in a rubber maid bin )) not to long ago, I had a powerhead in there running full time. When I would do water changes I would use it to blow "junk" off the rock. But, don't feel there is a need for it to be on a wavemaker.

No need in wave maker to cure LR not even in a reef tank...we just like to add the wave look.

Wow, leave work at 4:30 with only two replies and by 8pm there's 11.

Thanks folks, thats what I was thinking but since this will be my first SW tank, I figure its safer to ask the question.
