1. Good shapely live rock is key
Boulders of rock look bad no mater what you do.

2.A wall of rock in the back or a mound in the middle look un-natrual.

3.Go for a Shape in the foot print of the rock.
For instance i have my rock in a C shap with open sand in the middle.

4. Very the height of the rock from one side to the other(Left to Right or vice versa). Also vary the height from front to back.

A few of the things that i hate in a aquascape are.

1. Pilars of rock that if not glued together would fall from gravity alone.

2. Rock walls

3.To much rock(no sand)

4. BB Nuff said (I don’t care that your sticks look like Chernobyl meets Crayola)

5.Rock boulders.

Don't think about too much, that's what wife said is my problem with doing it. One day I took it all out and just started grabbing pieces and putting them in there without really looking. I Haven't felt the need to mess with it again.

When I aqauscaped my tank I had an idea of what I wanted it to look like. I was thinking of of one of those pirate coves that have like a hidden cave. You see these in movies where the pirates stash their treasure.
Besides for this idea I had I had other guidelines-
1. There needed to be good water flow around all the rocks so no debris collected
2. I tried to find larger pieces of rock between 10-20 pounds to use as center pieces
3. I wanted different areas in the rocks that different species would find more desirable based on accessibility

On the left side of my tank I fitted the rocks together tightly so that it would be more accessible to invertebrates than fish. In the middle I used a large piece of rock to make a arch. On the right side I have A pile of rock but the middle is actually a large cave were the fish sleep and swim. The entire structure is sturdy but has many gaps were even my coral beauty can swim through.
Here is a old picture. Photobucket
The center is much more opened today because there are no plants or gorgonian. The top of my rock work is covered Acros and other SPS, and I have Zoas and ricordia towards the bottom.
