Sump/refugium

ALLRIGHT HERES THE QUESTION. I WANT TO BUILD A SUMP/REFUGIUM, WENT TO A FEW LOCAL FISH STORES TO GET IDEAS. I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE OF BAFFLES. IF I USE A FILTER SOCK ON INTAKE, EGGCRATE WITH SOME FOAM TO ELIMINATE BUBBLES TO SEPERATE RETURN PUMP. WHY DO I HAVE TO HAVE ALL THOSE BAFFLES, THAT EVERYONE SAYS I NEED?

First, turn off your caps lock. It's impolite.

Baffles are used to create partitions in the sump so you can do different things with different areas. You might have a low flow area for a refugium, and a separate compartment for a protein skimmer. Baffles also help eliminate bubbles.

Yes, caps need to go. Filter socks can be a problem for a fuge. They will often catch pods. The also need changed on a very regular basis or they become a water quality problem. Personally, one reason for a fuge is to provide pods to the main tank. Anything that removes them from this system is not wanted imo.

to keep you from reading the links, here's the cliff's notes.

Baffles work to seperate sections.
A protein skimmer in a partitioned space will work much more efficiently than one in an open sump.
Many people use filter socks as bubble and detritus removal and many people have problems with them as their maintenance falls off.
Glass (or acrylic) panes and a tube of silicon is cheap and allows you to customize what you want out of your sump, now go check out some of those pics and designs you like and get building.
