Strange diatom observation

Why do diatoms only grow in the display tank, and not the refugium? For some reason this really intrigues me.

Are you talking about brown diatoms? I only had these for a brief time when my tank was starting up and then they went away.

What kind of fish in the display? Do you have something that might eat pods?

Well I just set it up, so there's nothing in it. I know it's part of the cycle, but it's wired that there are absolutely no diatoms in the refugium

Well, the light in the display is probably more intese, so they will grow better there, if there is nothing consuming them...
