I believe that it removes organic compounds from the water coulmn. I know that if I run w/o carbon for a while, I can see a yellow-ish tint in the water when looking through the tank from end to end. Once I add carbon, the tint is gone.
I know that carbon (in a freshwater environment) removes the tannins that are released from driftwood. in a nutshell.... it clears up the water.
