Clams
Hello All,
Happy New Year to All!! A violoet clam gifted by my friend as new year gift died yesterday simply turning into liquid form.My water paras all normal with SG a little on the lower end ie 1.019/25ppt.Are clams not recommended for new tanks(my tank is 4months old).My cleaner shrimps have been on it since the day it was in the tank.Total days is 03.Are they the culprits Thx, Haksar

No and i know how you feel (had two clams die on me) but i think it is your SG and because your tank is too young (at least 1 year for clams) also what is your calcium levels and iodine levels (could be becase of these).

Your salinity is more then a little low. Would bump it up to around 1.025/.026.
How did you acclimate it? And what was the salinity of the tank it came from?

You need metal halide lighting for clams, and the Derasa clams are among the hardier species. Stay with darker colored clams because they usually demand less light. Browns and beige are usually a good start. I would wait until your tank has been set up for at least a year to add another clam however.

Aslong as your parameters are ok and you have high lighting a clam will do fine in a newer tank.. With my redo of my 75G setup 2 months ago I added a clam and he is doing fine. Here's a pic...

Thanks all for your replied,I use 2x150 MH and 2x54W T5 10K daylight tubes. The clam was kept on the top rocks to get maximum light. My concern is my SG which after 20 % waterchange with salt water mixed RO is still 1.019/25ppt.My ph is 8.5 and calc is 350ppm and alk is 8.How can I safely increase my SG levels. For the time being no more clams.

When I need to raise my salinity I take gallon of RO/DI water and mix it with my reef salt. I make it much higher than my salinity in my tank, but low enough where there's not salt floating around. Use this water to top off your tank without quickly raising your salinity as to shock your critters. Just keep testing and do it over a week or two.
