Garlic, What is it good for?
Is Garlic good for treating ick?
If not what is it good for? Other than bread sticks or a good pasta dish. ![]() |

It supposedly helps build the fishes immune system, & fish love the taste of it. Will garlic cure ich? No. It may help the fish fight against it, but more importantly it can help make a sick fish eat, & that is what can save a fishes life. Also, it seems to be a great food and fish food with garlic doesn't seem to hurt, they love it.

generally the food is soaked in garlic juice. You can crush your own fresh garlic for garlic juice or buy a garlic supplement such as http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...16&pcatid=5016

I usually just use a shot glass and scoop it half-full of tank water. then I add a few drops of garlic juice, and then I break up a few large pieces of my marine flakes, and I stir the mix up. Then I use a fork to strain out the flakes so that I'm not adding all the garlic juice to the tank.
so far I only have 2 clowns in my holding tank, but they go NUTS over the stuff!! I feed them with the fork, and sometimes I kinda tease them and race the fork around in circles, and they are really crazy about following it. pretty funny to watch. they even will jump out of the water a little bit!! now if I try and feed them flakes without garlic, they will poke at it and look at me as if to say "*** IS THIS GARBAGE?!?!" fwiw, initially I just used garlic powder. same steps as above, but I would microwave for ~10 seconds which seems to release the garlic into the water much more than just dropping it in. |

Fish are attracted to garlic like ants are attracted to sugar. It makes them eat better, and by eating better they are stronger to resist the ich.

I agree with the above. ^ I do not think that it acts in any medicinal way despite what urban legend says. But, it does make fish more likely to eat.

there is a legend that it "repels" some parasites... kind of like how someone that eats a lot of garlic "smells" and "repels" humans. the parasites don't like the "smell" of the fish so never attach. Additionally, fish like it and it helps them start eating. lastly, garlic reduces cholesterol (sp?) in humans... maybe it does the same for fish =) jk
