Salinity 1.009 question
I'm transfering a few of my fish into a QT tank b/c of ick. Can a skunk cleaner shrimp survive the hyposalinity? I thought about putting one in with the fish just as an added possible aid to get rid of the ick.
I'm going to be transfering tomorrow (the water was just mixed and I want the parameters to be as close to the display tank as possible) so any help will be, well, helpfull. Thanks

I've read that inverts can not survive hyopsalinity?

No, I would not put a shrimp in the hypo-ed QT - hypo kills inverts.

No, It will die. Doubful it eats the ich parasite but it does clean the fish of many other things.

There was a post yesterday regarding the effectiveness of skunk cleaner shrimp in reducing ich -- apparently scientists have studied it, and ich has never been found in the stomach contents of these shrimp. I'd say that's pretty solid evidence that they don't actually remove embedded ich parasites; they do 'clean' the fish in other ways, but they're not an effective remedy for ich.
Additionally, hypo will kill any and all inverts -- this is why it works so well on ich. When you take the SG down to 1.009 the only things in the tank that will remain alive are the fish, and some bacteria. Best of luck with the ich -- I've found hypo 100% successful, as long as you go the full six weeks. That time doesn't include the day(s) it takes to go from 1.025 to 1.009, or the three days it takes to raise the SG back up; only the days when the fish are actually in hypo count.

Will do. Thanks a bunch. I'm heading for my LFS tomorrow to pick up the new tank (55G), and I started the QT yesterday. I tried to get the fish out last night, but there is too much rock for them to hide in. I guess it's time to change the rock formation anyway. I'll keep posting with the progress.
Thanks again everyone.

No rock or sand in QT. Bare bottom, pieces of PVC for the fish to hide in...or some folks use plastic or clay pots.
