Have you noticed anything missing like snails or hermit crabs? I have something like a web in my old tank....when I tore it down to move, I found a huge Eunicid worm....they make some webbing like material.....take a look in the tank a while after the lights in the tank and room are out....you may see something....just a suggestion.

Sounds like vermetid snails to me. There's some debate about if they are really bad, or just an ugly nuisance. There is a recent thread about it around here somewhere.

As said above, it's is most likely vermitid snails (?sp).

Do you see little tubes on the rocks about the thickness of a #2 lead pencil and maybe a 1/8th to half an inch?
If so, definitely what you have.

They are harmless and take food out of the water column. But thye can get on things like returns, power heads, etc. and become a pain in the arse. And if you just break the tube off changes are you will not get the snail which is curled up in the curly base of the tube. They tend to break above the curl.

I do have vermetid snails but this is something that covers a section of the rock. I can best describe it like the spiders webs you might find in the grass very tight nit...probebly not very helpful...I am not able to do pics at this time.

I think you should post pics........

It could be sponges growing on your rocks. If that is the case the are good things shows your tank is maturing.
