46 Gallon Setup

Hello everyone,
My Friend is going to give me his old 46G Bowfront tank. The tank has no holes in it or anything. I was thinking of taking it, putting 2 400 Marineland Emperor BIO-Wheel Powerfilters (total 800 gph), some low current and some Metal halide lighting. I have always had a nano tank and I though that his could be a nice step up into the land of SPS reefs.

Is 2 of those filters too much?
Any other Ideas how to set this up (keep in mind, money is an issue and I will not be in current living condition for much more than a year...so don't want to go to wild)

Thanks

Don't waste your money wiht the marineland emperor bio filter. Get yourself a skimmer instead. That thing is pretty much useless and the biowheel contributes to high nitrates.

Never had a skimmer, and don't know much about them...I will not need a filter with a skimmer?

yeah you won't need a filter. As for skimmers, since you mentioned your on a tight budget and you don't have a sump right? If you don't plan on getting a sump than hang on skimmers are your only choice. These can range from 50-500 dollars. A fairly inexpensive hob that works really well I'd suggest would be a octopus bh100 hang on. It cost 100 dollars and works really well right out of the box.

That seems like that could fit the budget...

What is the advantage of having a skimmer compared to a filter?
