?s about use/disposal of phosphate removal media
I am using PhosBan for the first time in my 29g. The directions say to use 50g for every 50gallons. So I put slightly less than one-third of the 150g contents into the filter bag and added it to my power filter by itself in such a way that the water must pass through it and not around it. Yes, I did rinse it first with RO.
My questions are this... 1. How long should I run this first "dose." A few hours? A few days? 2. How do I dispose of it? Can I just toss the used media in the trash? Flush it? 3. Would it be more effective to run PhosBan on new product water before a water change to remove possible phosphates before they enter the display? I've determined that my source water (RO) is probably the source of the phosphates, and its not from insufficient rinsing of frozen foods. Thanks!

Most people begin with about 1/2 the recommended dose. It's OK if you are using as much as you are, but you need to test your alkalinity daily right now because it can cause a significant drop in ALK. It is better if you run the media through a phosban reactor which is pretty inexpensive. ($35-40). Hopefully you thoroughly rinsed it before placing it in your system. Phosban actually lasts a long time. (If your phosphateas aren't too high). You could change out the first dose after a month or so. Once phosphates have been reduced you can change it out every 2-3 months.
