pump fpr a closed loop 45G tall

Wanting to turn my 45G tall tank into a closed loop system for more flow, especially the bottom of the tank.

This will be a FOWLR to house a couple of my "nippers" that I'll need to get out of my main system. Right now I have a CPR bak pak and a couple of powerheads in it. I'll also need to upgrade the lighting.

Looking for something under $100, perferably cheaper. Somthing I can plumb externally, like a Quiet One or a Mag...

Any suggestions?

We used to run a MAG7 with a Seaswirl on a CL for our 75g. It worked pretty well. There are various opinions on whether the MAGs should be run externally, but it worked well for years.

These days we run a 4200SEQ12 with an OM4-way, but that's a bit of overkill for what you are looking at.

thanks Doug, I don't want to go overboard, since this wont have corals andthose seaswirls are too damn expensive! Maybe the Quiet ones would be good, the only thing I dont like about MagDrives is that they run hot.

They do run a little hot. Some people love the QuietOne's. The one I tried for about a day was anything BUT quiet...

The Ocean Runner pumps have received some good press on the boards lately.

I have one a Mag7 pump from my freshwater (RODI holding) to mixed water container. I have a QuietOne 6000 that I use to pump my mixed saltwater to my display (it drains the 30G container quite fast). I also have a Mag24 running my PM bullet skimmer.

I've heard of the Ocean Runners, I guess I am also looking for how much flow would be good for a 45G FOWLR.

I would use the QuietOne that you have rather than purchasing another pump. They seem to leak less than the mag pumps.
How much flow is good, well that is really hard to answer because it depends on how you setup the flow. Since it is a FOWLR setup. I would setup the tank so that it has a circular flow patern in the tank. Make as much of the water move clockwise as possible, since you don't need to worry much about any random flow for stony corals and the Quite one you have should do that fine. Just have multiple outlets from the pump in the corners all pushing in the clockwise direction.

Thanks Kim, I had planed on putting 4 outputs in the back corners. essentially two pipes going down to the floor of the tank (it will be barebottom), with two outputs at the bottom and two at the top. I could then simply aim them generally in one direction to get a clockwise, or counterclockwise flow.

I'll probably invest in a new pump, since the QuietOne I have is spoken for
