what happens if a tank doesnt have a CUC?

Well you could have alot of algae problems, certain bad bacteria also

Excess nutrient causing 'whatevers' will not be consumed/removed by the CUC so naturally some algae would probably make itself apparent. Could cause more problems than that so you'll have to up your cleaning of the tank to make up for not having a CUC. If this is going to be a reef tank, I'd reconsider you're strategy. If it's fish only or FOWLR, than go for it, but be prepared to do the CUC's job.

I have never ran a reef tank without a CUC. I would have to think that you will be doing a lot more maint W/O one though.

There's some stuff that will work in aggressive tanks - big hermits and stuff like that.

I think that one of the best benefits of a CUC, is that, if a fish dies, the CUC will take care of it. maybe its morbid, but people go on vacations, or work, or sleep, etc, and its nice to know that if a poor fish dies, the CUC will take care of it before ammonia spikes happen and the whole tank is in jeapordy
