I guess I'm lucky....
I've been thinking about this for a while now.. I've read over and over that once the tank is set up that the first thing to expect is the diatom outbreak and then the hair algae outbreak... well.. I've had the tank set up and going since October.. so about 5 months now and I have yet to see any hair algae.. Diatoms come and go but they are controllable.. or maybe I just haven't gotten there yet? Also.. about how long does it take for the coraline to start showing up.. I know it takes the right parameters but like if I keep my Alk, calc and mag stable and every thing else in good condition.. are we talking several months... a year... or is it just variable from tank to tank.. Sorry, I'm a bit analytical and for some reason I expect everything to happen like clockwork.. I guess that's probably my first mistake lol... so anyway.. any thoughts?

Well really you would only get diatom but you don't want hair because they are a pain also coralline will come and fast with medium to strong lighting and good calcium levels.

My coraline started showing up when the new actinics where put on the tank. Never had hair algae, or if I did the fish ate it immediately. I wanted it to grow so I could have a lawnmower blenny, but no luck so far.

Just like Coraline it needs proper water conditions to grow. Poor coraline growth could show poor water quality as the same with algea.
A list of all known water readings would be very helpfull. |

I never had hair algae in my tank, either. My coraline didn't really start taking off until the tank was about six months old, and now I wish it hadn't... I'm tired of scraping it off the tank walls.
