top on or off???

My setup consist of a 54gallon coner aquarium. It comes with a glass top. My questions is what are the negatives of not having the top, I have a cat and a dog so would pet hair or dust have any affect on the aquarium????

the only negative is heat. It is hotter with the top on.

for me, there are no negatives to not having a top.... since going saltwater a few years ago, after being freshwater, I now like the opentop better.... it looks more natural to me, less like a "box", like freshwater tanks look like.

anyway, I dont have pets, so your concern is different, cant help you

Top off!! Better gas exchange and less heat (especially during the summer). I wouldn't worry too much about evaporation messing your wall paint from a 54G. 180G myself and have no issues. The evap. would also be helpful if you're planning to drip in kalkwasser (cheap easy form of calcium supplement) if you're planning to keep corals. On my old 60G, that's all I added as far as supplements and everything thrived (SPS, LPS, Softies). It actually prompted me to go bigger due to the size of the corals!

HTHs,

Minh

Some fish will carpet surf if you don't have come form of cover. I use eggcrate but other than that cover off.

Cover off. Your dissolved oxygen levels will fall through the floor and your tank could overheat because it wouldn't be able to evaporate correctly.
