I would also not use the glass plates over the tank. The area at the top of the tank is where gas exchange occurs(and the sump and skimmer). It is not good for that area not to breathe.
Organic laden water rises to the top where it is skimmed off--so you want that top layer very turbulent

Well, since the fixture already has protection over the bulbs you would just be cleaning the light more often. Just keep salt creep to a low and keep the glass clear on the light. I would rather clean my light than deal with low dissolved o2 and low pH....

k well hopefully we can come up with something. i appreciate all the advice! i'd love to just take the glass off but since technically it's not my aquarium (i got it for my boyfriend for christmas) i can't really do much unless that's how he wants. and i think he's afraid to take the glass off. ? i don't know what we'll do.

If you are afraid about fish escaping there are plenty of alternatives to a glass top that allow gas exchange as well as securing the top.
