Total GPH going through your system / Number of gallons your tank is

I can't remember but I think that is correct

If you want to know the turnover of the tank itself, add up all the power heads and returns and divide that by the tank size.

An example -- In my 58
1 super flow --- 1600 gph
1 Seio 820 --- 820 gph
1 Seio 620 --- 620 gph
Return pump --- 400 gph (( throttled back a bit and guessing at the head loose

So, 3440 gallons per hour divide by 58 gallons equals 60 X turnover ( rounded up )

The powerheads/water pumps are usually given a rating of how many GPH they produce. You then divide the total of all flow sources divided by the total water volume in your system.

The idea here is that you're given the gallons per hour, and how many gallons are in your tank. Then you find out (basically) how many times that flow "turnsover" your tank in an hour. Its just a basic measure to determine how strong the flow is on the whole for your tank.

If you mean just through you sump, just use only the return pump.

In my case 400 divided by 58 would be 7 X turnover (( again rounded up ))

You are going to have head loss and actual milage may vary. But it is just an estimation anyway. You can get the data sheet on your pump and figure your actual flow rate with given head loss. No one knows the "right" amount of turnover needed. The more the better in MOST instances. Enough flow to not have any dead spots is the main goal. Also, some corals need heavier flow, some less. Through your sump and/or refugium generally under 10X per hour is ideal, and the more the merrier in the tank, assuming you don't have any low flow corals in direct flow. You don't want to blow your fish againt the glass either!!!!
