Been researching a TON lately. I posted this picture on my other thread, but its unrelated so i am going to post it here too.

Why are you adding a filter in between your refugium and return to the tank? How are the pods going to get into your tank?

Its hard to tell in this picture, but are you having your tank drilled on the bottom? You want the water that feeds your sump to come from the surface of your tank, not the bottom. If your drain is on the bottom, you will definitely come home to a flood when the power goes out.
Also in this diagram it looks like you have the RO/DI going straight into the sump. I would separate the RO/DI from the tank and add the fresh water to a tank dedicated to your auto topoff. It just makes me feel more secure that even if the float valve or whatever you are using fails it won't just pump unlimited amounts of fresh water into your tank. Your returns also appear to be on the bottom of the tank. I would move them to the top and direct their outputs to different areas. This will allow you to better control the flow and any corals you have will appreciate that. Keep reading RC and keep asking questions. You have already found the single greatest source of information for keeping saltwater aquariums. |

The pipes into the sump will be from the overflow, i drew two so i could decide which is better placement. The auto top-off will have a switch but that switch will have a cutoff, so if it does get stuck, there is only a certain time limit that it will stay on before the power to it is cut off. My neighbor is an electrician and is setting it up. As for the returns, I have seen many powerheads at the bottom and fans at the top(not submerged). I like the submerged look because i can aquascape around it. Hiding the jets while making flow throughout the tank by bouncing off the walls of the tank. also I read that one or two heads pointed over the sand(not directly at it) helps with bio-filtration.
Am I wrong with any of these facts? if so tell me!
