Snail
I just bought some turbo snails. After i got them home i noticed one of the snails was attached to the back of another and its shell fell off. Has anyone run into this before, will it automatically get back to its shell?

I'm pretty sure not. When the snail grows the shell has to grow also, and that is like a fingernail. Not at all like a hermit crab.
I had a small one the fish ripped the shell off of, but then they got him and he was food. I don't know if a larger snail could regrow a shell, chances are left to the elements it will not make it that long.

I just read a cool paper about this happening to another species of snail. They won't reattach to their shells, and they have no protection once the shells are gone, so your Turbo is history if you don't want to put him in a tank by himself.

HMMM, that wacky URL isn't going to link, I see. Google search for:
automatization lamellosa and choose the fourth link, when showing all fourteen matches. It will be the link to www.thefreelibrary(dot)com. The word should actually be "autotomy" or "autotomization" rather than "automatization," but it's still a very interesting article. Cheers, Don |
