The Craziest Story Ever?

This is the story of Magellan, my somewhat newly aquired Diamond goby.

Magellan was purchased on February 7th, 2008 from my LFS. After 4 hours of acclimation he was added to my 55G reef display tank and made himself at home in his new environment with no apparent stress, he seemed happy digging his holes and shoveling sand into piles and scooting around the tank in his goby style.

The night of February 9th, Magellan decided to start jumping (about 3am, the tank is in my room so I heard it) He splashed around twice and I got up to see what the hell was going on. Magellan had jumped out of the tank and landed in my overflow box, I could see him looking up through the bottom of the tank, not a problem. In my tired haze I took a piece of screen I keep handy just for this type of occurance and haphazardly put it over the overflow box and went back to my bed. Splashing countinued for about an hour and then things were silent.

February 10th came around and I decided to move my newly aquired diamong goby back into the display and out of the overflow. I encountered one big problem- He was not there. I looked up and down, searched the display tank to see if he managed to jump back in, searched the floor, my sump downstairs- No Diamond goby.

I figured he'd show up or smell up and decided to give him a few days figuring he'd had a traumatic night and might be hiding well in the tank.

A week went past, still no goby. Having abandoned hope I casually threw him into my mental MIA column and continued my standard care and maintenance of my tank, including a complete cleaning of my sump. And really never thaught about him again.

Today is 2/21, approximatly 12 days have elapsed since the disappearance of Magellan, while empetying out my protien skimmer cup in my sump movement caught my eye- Magellan, my very thin and slightly lethargic diamond goby was chilling before my filters there in the sump.

Near as I can figure, he entered my covered overflow pipe, traveled down my 1" flex tubing to a point somewhere between my wall and floor where it must make a L and got stuck. Magellan would have then had to have chilled there in waterfall conditions for at least a week or until he lost enough weight from not eating to slide down the rest of the pipe and into the overflow where he had no food supply until his eventual rescue... Thats just Crazy!

Btw: Magellan is doing fine, albeit stressed at the moment. I'll let you guys know whether or not he has learned his jumping lesson.

Dude, that is one lucky goby, most fish wouldn't have made it through that ordeal.

I had a bi color blenny do something somewhat simlar during a move. I was breaking down the tank and trying to keep an eye on him when he got lost in the 120 tear down commotion. Half of the water was out of the tank for nearly two hours and then I heard a spashing sound coming from the closed loop on the back wall. The bicolor was in there with a 1/2 inch of water. What a crazy fish. He has remained healty and I am amazed he made it.

I had a very nice snake skin discus worth $80, I got up to feed them in the morning and he gorged himself, two hours later I come to look at my tank and he's gone??? I looked everywhere but no sign of him, the intake is only half an inch in diameter and he was 4in in diameter, I never saw him again, the only possible explaination was 'he jumped out a 5in hole flapped out into the open and was eaten by my dog'.

$80 dollar dog snack :/
