ok so do i have this right, does your tank cycle every time new rock or something is added?

It could if its big enough and uncured. Small pieces would be fine like frags. Its best to stock all the LR then cycle.

Your tank is always trying to establish an equilibrium between the bacteria that feed off of waste products and the "livestock". As such your tanks always going through micro cycles ... when you add more livestock or waste products you introduce a source of ammonia and mother nature will produce more bacteria to consume the ammonia .. if you introduce too much waste product at one time you get an ammonia spike. The waste product can come from fish, live rock etc.
