Chaeto dying
Hi all,
I added some chaeto to the sump around 2.5 - 3 wks ago, and they have been growing a bit. In the past week, I realized there's quite a bit of die off. They turned white/clear and felt off the ball. I noticed I haven't rotated it since i've got it, so that might have contributed. However, ever since I have rotated it a few days ago, it's still shredding. It took me a while to find a store that carry chaeto locally, and that was quite far away. I hope this won't die off just like this! If by any chance this actually dies, I think i'll put a phosban reactor in there instead.. Any advice? Thanks! Chris |

eventually it will do well, if your tank is 6 months old, it might be the lack of nutrients that causes the macro's demise.
i've had chaeto in refugiums with very little flow, and alot of flow- both did well. also i've had chaeto under 125 watts of 6400k light, and 23 watts of 5000k, both did well. it's not the light...it's what's not in the water, in a new tank. i've ran the light 24 hours, and 12 hours...both grew well, but i've noticed better growth with a day/night schedule. |

lower flow, if its not low already, dose some Iron, magnesium, 50-100 w 5k to 8k chemical buld, and you will be given the stuff back to the LFS for credit

i disagree. i wouldn't add anything to the tank to grow macroalgae.
if you just give it some time, it will take. you also don't need a hundred watts of light for macros to grow. i'm assuming this is a small refugium judging by your "current tanks". all you need is a 23 watt energy saver bulb from walmart/home depot. nothing fancy, but keep in mind that plants grow better under the lower kelvin temperatures. here's the fixture i have over my 29" x 18" x 21" deep refugium, and i take heaps of macros to the LFS for credit every 3 weeks- |

Mine was not growing until I recently added a 36 watt t5 fixture to my sump....I went out of town for a week and the thing tripled in size growing into two softball size pieces in that short time. I run it 24/7. In my little amount of experience, the temperature of the bulb will make a big difference. I had better results 5500 K or higher.

This is what I have as light: (2700k)
I have medium flow through it, and the lights are on for around 13 hours a day reverse schedule to the main tank's light. Should I go hunt for a higher temp bulb? |

I cannot get the stuff to grow. Personally, I hate it. Other macros grow well for me but not chaeto. So..........I grow other macros. Never had any go sexual either. Don't know what the answer is....
