Titanium Heater Problems?

I just started using an Azoo Titanium heater, but I am confused by it's settings. To keep my tank temperature at a consistent 78 I have to have the heater's temperature dial turned up to 94. It has been steady like this for a day or so now. The heating cycles seem normal.

Is this normal? Is the controller just off like most heaters, just moreso?

What is the wattage on your heater? And I also would not use this heater if you have to dial the temp up to 94 to get your tank to 78.
A slight error of 1-5 degrees is possible. 16 is dangerous. Return it and get a new one!

This is definitely not the norm. I have a WON titanium heater from 2002. It has been in storage for 5 years until I started my latest tank about 1 month ago. Everyone will bash the WON heaters, but it has served my tank well in the past and seems to at the moment. Anyway, my heater requires the dial to be turned to ~82F to maintain a temp around 79F at late night and morning and 81F during the evening when I'm around. This is mainly due to turning the heat down when I go to bed.

If your concerned, I would invest in a temp controller after you return this one. Essentially ALL heaters are time bombs waiting to wreak havoc when they stick open. Supposedly the WON titanium heater is controlled by "IC", but I still question the safety margin over a bi-metallic thermocouple......

So I figured out what was going on, and I'm lucky I caught it now. Basically my thermometer was off by about six degrees, and has been even with the old heater. The new heater works fine. I'm lucky that I turned things down this morning and that evaporation kept the temp in the tank down. I have checked with two other thermometers now, one a good old alcohol and glass model and the true temp in the tank was 85. Yikes.

I think that I'm still going to invest in a temp controller though.

Thank you.

The Ranco controllers are pricey ( around 60-75 non-wired, 100 or so pre-wired) but they are the only ones I trust.
