Eggcrate on floor
Hello everyone. I'm going to be running a 3 inch sand bed and have live rock in my 65g tank. I have some eggcrate that I can put on the floor but don't know if it's needed. I was told under the rocks is a wise decision but others say the entire floor of the tank can benefit from the eggcrate. If I'm going with a sand sifting goby and some burrowing cuc members, would doing the entire floor of the tank in a 1/4 inch eggcrate be beneficial or should I just place the rocks on it or no eggcrate at all?
Thanks Dave |

You are going to get mixed reviews on this. I personally feel safer knowing that my LR is sitting on eggcrate, rather than a piece of 1/2" glass. I have a 4x2 tank, so I placed eggcrate the entire surface, then put rock down, and then put sand in. There are spots that needed to be "groomed" to ensure the eggcrate wont be uncovered, but it is under control now.

I like the idea of the eggcrate protecting the glass but I know 3 inches of sand will cushion any potential falls well. I also wonder how my sand sifters will survive and if the sand between the blocks of the crate will become traps for unwanted stuff that the sifters can't get to.
