I use a Rio 400 pump hooked to 1/2 vinyl hose to pump water out of my buckets into the sump for water changes. For top off I use and JBJ ATO hooked to Tom's aqualifter pump.

My friend throws in a cup of r.o. water in his DT daily, so I think that would be ok. I bought the double switch for the sump at autotopoff.com, they also sell pumps and tubbing... so far works very well. I just need a bigger bucket for my r.o. water so it will last longer. If you can afford one, I think it's worth it. Sure makes it a little easier to be gone for a few days.

I put half a liter of water into my DT every day... it's fine. I just make sure no fish/inverts are directly in the new water zone.

What size pump do you use with the JBJ ATO?

It's a 3.5 gph dosing pump from Tom's Aquatics called the Aqua lifter. Marine Depot sells them for $13
