Question Pineapple [scypha] sponges

What I thought may have been copepods seem to be pineapple sponges. Thank you fellow RC member Do they serve some type of purpose? Are there any fish that can benefit from this outbreak? They seem to be taking over. Any suggestions on how to get rid of them or at least control them? Should I remove them? Please advise.

i got a TON of these little fellas. they are harmless filter feeders. if they look bad, then get rid of em. otherwise, their not going to hurt anything.

Do you have any idea what brings them on? There seems to be a sudden outgrowth of them.

They are filter feeders, and tend to come and go fairly rapidly in newish tanks. Their food supply tends to be limited in stable systems.
