Fish in overflow

What is the best way to keep my fish from getting in my overflow boxes? My clown took the long trip to my sump the day after I got him and now I have a damsel who is stuck in there. Unfortunately without taking all the piping out there is now way to get him out. I was hoping he would get sucked in and make the trip to the overflow but I think he is to smart for that so he is just kinda swimming around the bottom. I dont wanna have to keep dealing with this.

You could try covering the top of the overflow box with a mesh material, like a roll of plastic gutter guard from Home Depot.
