If your cycling your tank you should have p/h's on for water movement and the tank temperature between 78-82.

You'll have algae outbreaks probably for at least first six months your tank is set up.

If not your tank is still cycling and I wouldn't add snails or worry about the cyno.

Water change may help. You may want to check the level of your phosphates if it doesn't . You'll go through algae outbreaks and even though it's in eyesore just wait it out for now. Blow the cyno off the rock and finding some sand sifting snails or fish will help keeping it off your sand.

Even pointing a powerhead right above your sand may help. Just don't let it create a sandstorm like it has many times for me

By the way, that isn't an Astraea, it's a trochid, Tectus fenestratus.

Thanks for the link pagojoe. I bought some of these labeled as "pyramid" snails at the LFS. I always wondered what they really were. The owner thought they came from the Phillipeans.

Compared to astreas and turbos (i've been through more than my share) these seem hardy and active. Plus, they can readily right themselves if they fall.
