Refugium or RDSB

My wife has a ninety gallon reef with 135 lbs. live rock and a 2" sand bed. She has some LPS, soft corals, and a few seahorses. The sump is 36" long and has a 24" section designed for a refugium. I set up the refugium, but she does not like the light coming from the tank in the middle of the night. I was wondering if I filled the refugium section with sand ( 6" or so ) without the lights, would I get the same benefits of a RDSB.

Any ideas woul be appreciated.

If RDSB stands for Remote Deep Sand Bed, IMO, the answer is yes. You can even add some LR. One of the LFS has a similar set up on one of their display tank. The down side would be, it will not help in the remove PO4. I myself, would set up a refugium.
