tunze/vortech on a 4' 120gal
looking into a vortech powerhead- does anyone have one? Will 1 reach 4' across the tank, are they loud?
My other option is tunze, can they be mounted at an angle? If i put it on the back wall of the tank (120-4') will the flow tear apart the sand bed? Will 1 tunze reach 4' across tank from the side? I will have sps, but this is not an sps only tank, it will be very mixed with sps near the top only due to my lighting. |

the vortech and the tunze will reach across a 4' tank, depending on where you put the power heads will determine how much of the sand bed will be torn up.
i'm building the same tank you are and had the same thougths as to flow, i think i'll be going with the vortechs.

I would do 2 of the 6101's on a 7095 controller . It will allow you to have much more random flow patterns.

tunzes are nice because they can be aimed in different directions as where the vortecs can only face straight. I have heard from friends that the vortecs are loud and they switched over to tunzes. but i have no personal experinces with vortecs

I have used several different powerhead configurations on my 55 gal (4') acro tank. I stated with the Vortech (did not like it, hard to adjust, less flow than advertised IMO and finally quit working). Then I used two Koralia 4's (dependable and adjustable, but less flow than advertised).
I now use the Sure Flow MJ1200 mods and am happy with them. I started with 2 (each rated at 2100 gph+) and that was too much. Then I repleced the propeller on one, so that it dropped to 1600 gph and it was still too much. I am now just using one. The tank is in a peninsula configuration as a quasi-room divider, so I only have one short side to mount powerheads. One MJ mod still delivers about 10 cm/sec even at the far end of the tank. I am also experiencing very turbulent flow at the far end of tank (4' away from the powerhead). This is the first flow technology I have tried that accurately delivers its advertised flow. Also, I am getting water movement in the whole tank, as the suction on the return delivers about 10-12 cm/sec. Stated differently, the entire water mass is in motion. Price is great too. HTH Peace
