barebottom acro tank
First off id like to say hello to everone.this board has alot of good info and very knowledgeable reef keepers.im happy to be a new member.....
Im wanting to start a sps tank.i already have a 125 tank with 3 400watt halides and a 30g sump.My delima is im torn between a dsb or a barebottom tank.Ive read numerous post on both and cant make up my mind on which way to go.My question is how many of you run barebottom versus dsb and how old is your system.im exspecially interested in the age of the dsb owners being that i read about the dreaded crash due to nutrient buildup. Oh, im going to use tha berlin style filtration....any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bobby M.... |

To Reef Central Since you're specifying acros, I'd ask over in the SPS forum and see if you get some guidance there. There are people there who have run all types of substrate choices, and don't forget the shallow sandbed as well (SSB), which is what I have. I know of some who had gone BB, but then decided to go back to sand. I don't know that you'll get anything on which to make a firm decision. Ultimately, it's up to you. good luck

The Only thing that I do not like about Sand is when you are trying to get proper flow in the tank the sand seems to blow around at least in my tank. I almost wish that I went BB. I like the look of the sand its just the fact that I have to put it all back flat every couple days since it gets blow in piles. I have tried to adjust the Power heads a bunch of times lowering and making them higher turning etc. No luck.
