How's this sound?
I've got my 55g. Will be getting a 20gL for a rufugium. So far here's what I've come up with for equipment and supplies. Let me know what you think. I welcome any and all suggestions for improvements.
Tek 4x54W w/ Blue+,Super Actinic, Aquasun, Blue+ 30#'s LR 50#'s base rock ASM G-1x skimmer 2 x Koralia 1 PH's Sedra 350 GPH return pump API SW and reef test kits Refractometer 2 x Finnex Titanium 150W Heaters Lifereef Overflow Other than the miscellaneous stuff, thermometer, salt, substrate, and maintenance supplies, how's this look? Will the PH's and return pump provide enough flow? |

Sounds like a great start, the flow depends on what kinds of corals you plan on keeping.

I'd say you're lookin good!!! Kudos on choice of light and skimmer! I'd bag some of the base rock. If you're running a sump and that skimmer, You could get away with alot less rock. More room for your fishies to swim and your corals to grow. Make it a BIG 55 gal. (just suggestions, no offense)

good start but remember to take headloss into account with your return pump. if the pump produces 350gph at 0 head then after the 5 feet or so it may only produce 250gph.
IMO i would go with a couple koralia 3's though. |

As far as the corals go, I would like to leave my options open to anything with the exception of SPS. I don't think my lighting would handle those. But I'm quite fond of candy canes, open brains, zoas, frogspawn, torch, mushrooms, and ricordea. Maybe some echinophyllia and tree coral.

Check out alot of pics on RC. Alot of people are now going with the "open" aquascape, vs the old skool "wall of rock".
With a nice open scape and some torches, hammers, and frogspawns you'd get some sweet flowy corals and leave yourself plenty of room on the bottom for open brains. Decorate the rocks with shrooms and zoos. Could be Very Nice! That's just what I like. You really are off to a great start for what you want to keep. Some guys are successfully keeping clams and SPS under T5's as well. Lookin forward to some pics when you get going.

Sounds good. I was afraid that I wouldn't have enough in tank flow using the 1's. I just didn't want to create too much flow. But I guess that by the time you factor in the headloss on the return pump, the Koralia 2's will be perfect. In addition to the upsizing of the Koralia's should I also consider upsizing the return pump? I'm ignorant when it comes to how much flow is good. Doing the research on the corals I want to keep, the flow requirements are listed as high, medium and low. Not exact numbers. Makes it kind of difficult for a newbie to know how much is enough.

Everything looks pretty good. I am going to agree with kau_cinta_ku and say those koralia 1,s aren't going to do it. I think the 3's will work much better. In my 55 I have 1 kralia 4 which I point toeards my return and I get some pretty good random flow.
As for the return pump, I think you'll be ok. I use a mag 12 I had from a previous tank and I have to keep the flow restricted a good amount so the overflow isn't overwhelmed. If you get 250 gph, thats still turning the whole tank 5 times per hour. Not bad. Only one more suggestion. One of my biggest rgrets I had after setting up my 55 is that I didn't make it a 75 which is not much bigger but 6inches more in depth. This also wouldn't make it so cramped under the tank. The extra depth also leaves more room for creative rock work. The reason I didn't get the 75 was the extra money. Good luck, I think you have a great start and can't wait to see the pictures. |

I have 2 Korolia #2 and a maxjet 1200 in my 55g. I know this isnt the place but I have a brandnew ASM G-1 skimmer, Mag 9.5 pump, and life reef overflowbox for sale. e-mail me at bhat@sc.rr.com if you would like to discuss.
