I just went through this as well but i run 3 small heaters on almost 300 gallons of water and one was stuck on and it was at 83 ruining smaller ones means that even if it stays on it will take a long time to do any damage if at all I have had 3 different types fail one on and 2 off in my different tanks in the past 6 months they don't make things like they used to

Defiantly buy a controller for your heater and your tank, one of the best investments I have made in the hobby. I have a ReefKeeper 2 and love it.

I have been using a Aqua Medic Biotherm Controller for quite some time without issue. I will be getting a Reef Keeper 3 when it comes out though ;-)
